The Rev. Ed. Bacon is rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, a congregation known for its radical inclusion of all who seek to participate in the community of Christ's Body. Fr. Ed was on Oprah last week, and I admit that I record Oprah every day. I was really excited to see an Episcopal priest on Oprah, and though I didn't watch every minute of this episode, I did watch all of Fr. Ed's comments! I was thrilled when he said "being gay is a gift from God." It's such a clear statement of how he - and I - understand God's activity in the lives of God's people, and not just straight people.
Of course, not every one was so thrilled. So, Fr. Ed was on again today to explain what he meant - which was exactly what he said! No apology. No backpeddling!

It will be a wonderful time when this type of comment does not cause a stir and is no longer news – it is just love.
Not long ago the Biblical literalists used “and he is seated at the right hand of the father” to label left handed people evil. Schools would not allow young students to write with their left hand. The inconvenience of being left handed in this right handed world does not compare to the discrimination suffered by our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters.
The commonality is that we are all created in the image of God. Some were created left handed and some were created gay and lesbian. The “evil” of being left handed is no longer with us. It will be a blessed time when the “evil” of being gay or lesbian is just a painful memory in our history.
As Christ told us “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now”. This is one more lesson we need to learn and I think we are now ready to bear the good news of the blessings of our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters.
